2016 Promises to be a Very Good Numismatic Year

To put a bit of a Frank Sinatra tune in your head, 2016 is shaping up to be a “very good year” at Geoffrey Bell Auctions Ltd. and the Coin Cabinet. First, a moment is needed to truly thank everyone involved with our successes in 2015 and to wish you all the very best of holiday greeting as we prepare to usher in a new year. It’s going to be a busy year for us and that’s definitely a reason to celebrate.

Our first big event is the Toronto Coin Expo Spring Sale. The Expo has already earned the reputation as the premier show for knowledgeable numismatists and there are two auction sessions set for April 21st and 22nd. There’s already some great material being consigned for this event.

Geoffrey Bell Auctions Ltd. is excited to be back as the official auctioneer for the Royal Canadian Numismatic Association’s annual convention. The Ottawa Numismatic Society is hosting the show this year. Geoff Bell has been a huge supporter of the RCNA over the years, serving as president of the organization twice, and there will be three auction sessions from July 20th-22nd.

The Fall sale for the Toronto Coin Expo happens September 29th and 30th. It’s good that the Expo is a biannual event because we’ve witnessed that show attendees just can’t get enough of this power-packed numismatic event. There are another two auction sessions scheduled for the Expo.

To close 2016, we’re thrilled to announce another Moncton November Sale. This has come to be recognized as the best there is in Atlantic Canada, drawing bidders from across the globe, and there is already some exciting news in the works to make the November 26th auction particularly exciting.

Geoffrey Bell Auctions Ltd. and the Coin Cabinet know our success hinges upon our ability to successfully serve our clients’ needs, which is why we want to extend our heartfelt wishes for a very Merry Christmas and an especially prosperous New Year.

Moncton November Sale 2015 Summary

The opportunity to present a quality auction right in their own backyard is important to Geoffrey Bell Auctions Limited and with this year’s Moncton November Sale they proved it possible to operate Canada’s finest numismatic auction house right in Atlantic Canada. Prestigious shows such as the Royal Canadian Numismatic Association’s annual convention and the ever-growing Toronto Coin Expo are important events, but the ability to draw crowds both in person and online from the hub of the Maritimes is vital to the health of Canadian numismatics in general.

The biggest highlight of the night in the eyes of the Bells was the charity portion of the auction, which generated $6,000 for the Friends of the Moncton Hospital Foundation thanks to the generosity of iCollector and those that bid on the fundraising lots.

There were a number of significant sales. The very rare Canadian blacksmith copper, Wood 39, head L with X behind head found a happy home, as did a number of highly collectable bank notes. The 1902 Dominion of Canada four dollars may have been the bargain of the night, while its 1882 and 1900 cousins proved how popular this denomination is in the collecting community.

Some of the most exciting moments came via the J.O.P. counterstamped Canadian dollars. All four offerings sold well above their estimates, with the 1947 blunt 7 being the highest achiever. Witnessing such strong bidding, especially in what is often thought of as a down market, is significant for the Canadian scene.

Everyone representing Geoffrey Bell Auctions Limited did their part to ensure a successful sale in Moncton and this was validated by the strong showing in person and on the Internet, furthering the firm’s reputation as the top auction house in Canada. Keep your eyes peeled for their next offering.
